Queen’s Herald June 2022
Highlights
- Our Zoom meeting on the 16th of this month will feature Bruce Lind and, he hopes, others. This month’s topic is, guess what, our 2022 TRS Rose Show. We will start with a discussion of garden chores for June/July and then move into a program that uses both power point slides and video clips to talk about all the things you need to know to cut, transport and groom your roses for entry early on June 25, 2022. There will be time for Q & A about the Show for sure.
- The Tacoma Rose Society has a rose show coming up! After a two-year hiatus, we are proud to be back with the show. We encourage all members of the local public, plus TRS members, to participate. Even if you have never exhibited before… especially if you have never exhibited before… we encourage you to enter some roses. It’s easy!
- Because the American Rose Society sanctioned show’s purpose is to educate the public about roses, ALL ROSES USED MUST BE OUTDOOR GARDEN-GROWN ROSES.
- All you have to do is cut your finest blooms the night before or the morning of the show. They just have to be healthy roses that you have cultivated in your garden. Cut them long stemmed, leave the foliage on them & put them in water – you’ll cut them to length and clean up the foliage when you vase them at the show. Start reading on pg 1-3 . . . and visit us by Zoom on the 16th at the monthly meeting for details & the question / answer session about the show.
- New venue: This year we’re at the Rotunda on the University of Puget Sound on N. 14th St & Alder St. north of Hwy 16, using the Union Ave exit. A map is included on the back page of the small Show Schedule sent out by email to members, plus here’s a Google map to get you oriented from I-5.
- The theme of this year’s show is “Memories and Dreams” which is a big factor in Arrangement design. This year’s Arrangement schedule begins on the 4th page of the Small Rose Show Schedule and continues through the 5th page. READ THESE PAGES. Pay special attention to the Rose Arrangement Rules. The button link to the Schedule is below. Many lovely arrangements have lost a first-place ribbon by ignoring these details. Jo’s excellent advice is on pg 3. She will also be a large part of the Q & A session at the 16th Zoom meeting – and she is nationally recognized as a leader in arrangement design & judging.
- Please remember that our Thursday Deadheading Parties at Pt. Defiance start this year on a Wednesday – June 22 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM – to save the workforce’s energy level needed to set up on Friday the 24th for our Rose Show the next day. After this first week we will continue on each Thursday until September 8th. The full article by Keith is on pg 4. Current pictures of the June garden are on pg 7. Better sharpen & disinfect your pruners . . .
- Deadheading roses simply means to remove the spent blooms to make way for new blooms. As we remove the part of the plants that contains the seeds in the old bloom the cane is tricked into acting like it never had a bloom and so it then produces another bloom in a few weeks for visitors to enjoy.
