Rose Q & A

The following are actual rose gardening questions received from Tacoma Rose Society Website visitors plus answers provided by TRS Consulting Rosarians...

January Questions:

Hi! I suppose your roses are like mine and beginning to bud out.  I'll be pruning most of these off and I really would like to dormant spray. Is it too late? The snow and freeze killed off some bugs and disease but I want to do what I can now rather than later. I really had the aphids last year and the thrips have been a big problem for the past 3-4 years (as long as I've been growing roses). Of course the thrips are in the back by the house where I see them the most on my favorite and most fragrant roses, even the ones in the pots.
Thanks for your help,
Ellen

Answer from TRS Consulting Rosarian:

I intend to do a dormant spray soon. Today and tomorrow seem like good days as long as it stays dry for a few hours after the spray. It is also a good idea to spray with your regular rose fungicide as soon as you have done your final pruning and bed clean-up. That can be done at regular strength if the bushes are already starting to grow. The control I hear about for thrips is a fine spray on buds and blooms. Orthene used to be the spray of choice, but I think there is a newer alternative on Rosemania.com.
